Comic panels that help me make it from day to day: Batgirl 6.
I am glad to hear that this is meaningful to you!
There was some anger about it here on Tumblr, people took it as a meta statement that Barbara was meant to be the ONLY Batgirl, over Steph, Cass, and others.
That was never the case, it was purely something Bruce said to Barbara when her confidence was a little bit low, nothing remotely meta about it.
I LIKE the idea of other Batgirls, everyone has a favorite. I still hold out hope for the day where we might be able to see them somewhere someday (I know, I know, but I’m an optimist, still!).
Ok, I’m an unabashed Steph fanboy, and I’m a touch disappointed that Steph isn’t in the purple this time around but…
For fuck’s sake, people. This is a reboot. To about 3 years after Barbara was paralyzed, itself 3 years after the last reboot. Stephanie didn’t appear, in any capacity, until about six or seven years after the last reboot. Cass didn’t appear until fourteen years after the last reboot.
There’s characters and groups we miss, but the last universe was 27 years old, and itself built on the ashes of more than 45 years of DCU. This new DCU? It’s a year old. Twelve issues on the shelves, and that’s it. It may take some time for our favorite parts of the old universe to come back, but trashing some of the creators of the new universe because you miss parts of the old? That seems truly pointless, and counter-productive. Instead, you should support the new universe, support the creators you love (true fact: I have not seen an episode of Smallville since season 1. I am buying Season 11 because Bryan Q. Miller’s name is on the cover), and keep the flames of your favorite characters alive. Bury tumblr in Stephanie fanart. Write the fanfiction, long and short, action-packed and as slashy as you like. Every so often, send DC comics a bouquet of waffles from Stephanie.
But support comics. Judge what is created on it’s own merits, buy back issues in digital when you can, and talk about the things you love without attacking good things for not being what you wanted. Because the DCU never match your headcanon. But it can be glorious, and it’s only the end if you want it to be.
